Drugstore Mascara Run Down

I have tried quite a few mascaras in my day. Not every mascara in the drugstore, but a good number. I just wanted to list what is great, or not so great, about each mascara I've tried. At the end I will list them in order of my favorite to my least favorite.

What criteria do I look for in a mascara? Let's see:
- Volumizing
- Separating
- Lengthening
- No Smudging
- No Clumping
- No Flaking
- Very Black in Color
- Dry Formula
- Holds A Curl

That's not a lot to ask for, is it?

My Look: Sweet Summer

Today I didn't even think to take pictures until about 6:30 in the evening. I'd already had my makeup on since 10 am, been out and about, in the rain. So I don't look as fresh and "sweet" as I did this morning LOL.  Eh, it happens. I stopped at the MAC counter this afternoon and picked up the eye shadow 'Paradisco', which is an awesome coral color. You know me and my coral....

Face:
Neutrogena Healthy Skin foundation
Rimmel Match Perfection concealer
Maybelline Dream Matte Powder (t zone)
Physicians Formula Bronze Booster Seasons bronzer
ELF Studio Blush in Peachy Keen

Ulta shadow in Silk (brow and inner corner highlight)

Why So Many Nudes??!!

Yesterday I decided to take a little time for myself, and off I headed to the mall. That in itself just spells bad news for my wallet. Of course I ended up at Ulta (don't I always?) While pursuing the aisles I came upon the new Physicians Formula Nude Eyes Shimmer Strips. It was so cutely packaged, so pretty, I had to have it. So I did. When I got home I went to find it a home among my collection. As I'm doing so, I realized I just bought ANOTHER neutral palette. What the F*** is wrong with me??!!! I have so many nude, natural, neutral palettes and the like already. *Sigh* Houston.... I think we have a problem. Here's a look into my Hall of Shame.

Wet n Wild singles in Nutty & Brulee, Ulta Baked Duo in Natural Beauty, L'Oreal Hip Duo in Bustling, CoverGirl Tapestry Taupe, MAC Naked Lunch, MAC Satin Taupe, ELF duo in Butter Pecan, and Revlon Nude Slip.

Too Faced Natural Eye palette, NYX trio in Aloha/Mink/Deep Bronze, Wet n Wild Walking on Eggshells, Wet n Wild Vanity palette, Physicians Formula Nude Eyes palette, ELF quad in Butternut, Too Faced quad from the Beautiful Dreamer collection.

Urban Decay Naked palette, Urban Decay Naked 2, and Coastal Scents 88 Warm palette.

See what I mean? If I ever say to myself,  "I need another brown eye shadow", I hope I have enough sense to slap the shit out of myself. Does anyone else have an abundance of neutral eye shadows? Do I need to check into rehab? Heaven help me..... =D

A Ridiculous Collective Haul

I haven't done a haul post in SO long! It's crazy, and I hate when I do that because then my collective haul is huge. Then I look like a makeup hoarding nut LOL. I did get a lot of things on sale, or with coupons, or things like that. So I guess that makes me feel better about myself ;-)

Bath and Body Works:

Into The Wild body splash $5
Orange Sapphire body splash $3

NEW Pink Chiffon lotion $1

Face Products:

Maybelline Dream Matte powder
Revlon Colorstay foundation
Hard Candy Sheer Envy primer
Neutrogena Healthy Skin foundation ($2 off coupon)
Wet n Wild 'Reserve Your Cabana' bronzer

*The WnW bronzer is a re-promote of an old favorite 'Acapulco Glow'. This is $3.99 and exclusive to Walgreens. It is much to light to be an actual bronzer. I use it as a face powder and love it, because it has a subtle sheen to it*

Ulta Cosmetics Review

You may recall a couple months back I had an Ulta haul (my first, and my first blog post also) You ca see it HERE. I have now had over 3 months to play with it, and wanted to do a deeper review. I had bought the Getaway Glamour palette for $18. It is still available at Ulta.com .  I was SUPER excited about this, being my first ever Ulta shopping trip and purchase.

This palette includes 38 eye shadows. The shadows are kind of hit or miss for me. Some of them are REALLY great. (I especially love the color Silk). Some of the others just have shoddy pigmentation. You really have to dig, and then they don't want to blend. The more neutral shades are a lot better than some of the more colorful shades. I don't know, I guess this is actually kind of common for any brand brand really. You have studs... and duds. After purchasing higher end, and cheaper, products that perform much better I just don't reach for my Ulta shadows much anymore. I should play with them more often. There really is a great variety of shades in the palette.
There are 8 lip colors in this kit. I do actually enjoy the lip colors very much. They are all nicely pigmented. Not the greatest staying power, but I never have much look there (except for Rimmel Lasting Finish). The biggest issues I have are: 1) You have to dig your finger in to put it on, then you have messy fingers. 2) The palette is big, you can't through it in your purse for a lip touch-up. There is an actual tube gloss in this set also, which is very nice. It seems very berry colored with glitter. It comes off more sheer, which is just fine with me. Others may not like that however.
Getaway Glamour with 2 sets of "stripe" bronzers ( I don't know what to call them, there are stripes of bronzer) These are actually very pigmented, but one set is much too dark for me. I should try it as an eye shadow. There is a "stripe" blush, and also a pressed powder. I haven't used them much, so I can't really review them.
Lastly, the brushes. The brushes in this palette were absolutely crap-tacular. The lip brush is limp and frays. The sponge tip basically disintegrated. Total bummer there.
All in all, what you get for the price is not bad at all. There are some letdowns in here, but not all together bad. Have you tried any Ulta brand products? What are your thoughts?

  • Medium purple on outer V/ outer third of lid.

  • Curl lashes, mascara.
  • Contour cheeks with bronzer.
  • Milani Luminoso blush on apples of cheeks.

Christmas Gift Guide to Show Your Guy

Let's face it ladies: men have no idea what to buy their significant other for Christmas (or birthdays). I received a DVD player last year for my birthday. Yes, I cried.
I'm here to break it down for you (I like to keep it real haha). If you like beauty products, or want an idea of something to try out, show your man this list. Give the guy a break, they can't read minds girls! (Trust me, I learned this the hard way.... DVD....)
There are WAY too many things on this list to have a picture of every single thing. Almost all product descriptions will be clickable links where you can go check it out. This list is composed of both drugstore and higher end products. Also, let me say this: don't ask for mascara or foundation. I don't know why, it just seems too weird and personal to me. Besides, shade matching on ourselves it hard enough, don't even bother trying to have a guy do it LOL.

Eye Shadows/ Eye Liners
I think if you are going to ask for eye shadow, go for a palette. It has more to offer, and there are some great gift-able palettes out there around the holidays. I'll list some basics. These are mostly neutrals, because you can't go wrong there.

Too Faced Natural Eye palette
Blush
I have a couple options here, but blush is something that has a lot to do with preference. Don't forget to specify if you like pink, peach, pinky/peach, berry.... etc.

Lips
There are quite a few lip sets out for the holidays right now. Here are some choices for you lip product junkies out there ;)
Kat Von D set
Nail Polish

Glimmer Wonderland set
High End Combo Sets
LORAC Jewelry Box
Skin Care

Sweet Kisses & Merry Wishes set

Fragrance
There are always so many great fragrance sets this time of year. Places like Walmart and Meijer always have sets that include perfume and lotion for $15- $30. They have all the celebrity fragrances, and also brands like Lucky. Another option are "Rollerballs". Basically what a rollerball is, is a tube of perfume with a ball on the end that you roll onto your skin. They are $19, and are available at Ulta and Sephora. I'm sure other places sell them for cheaper if you look around for them.
Sephora also has a pretty cool Roller ball set for $65. It is a set of 7 different full size rollerballs, which retail for $19 each. I think that's a pretty cool way to try out a bunch of scents before spending $60 on a full bottle. They used to include a certificate in this set that was good for a FREE full size of your favorite, but I'm not sure if they still do that or not.

I hope this helped you out for your Wish List this holiday season, maybe you got a few ideas of gifts to GIVE also =) Hopefully this helps the guys out there out too. Now nobody tell me they got a DVD player this year (unless you asked for one of course!)

Happy beautifying lovelies!!

Haul & Review - Ulta

I have so many things I've bought over the last month or so that I needed to review. To make it easier for me, I've kind of grouped things together, so bear with me for all these haul posts. I didn't buy all of these things at one time, I've picked stuff up here and there. This is stuff I've gotten at Ulta. I am in "Club Ulta", and you get a point for every $50 you spend. Every 3 months you get a certificate to trade in your points for FREE products! If you have 6 points (which is $300 spent, and I'll never get there lol), you can pick ANY perfume up $45 for FREE. You can also get things like a free sitting at the salon, a curling iron, all kinds of things. So I though that was pretty cool. Anyway, I purchased:

- NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in "Yogurt"
- NYX blush in "Pinched"
- Essence Eyeliner Marker
- Essence Waterproof Mascara
- Essence Multi-Action False Lash mascara
- Essence All Eyes on Me mascara
- Ulta nail polish in "Princess"

1) NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are highly recommended by MANY! They are a great eye shadow base (it is a cream shadow stick). They apply easily and have great pay-off. Make sure to tap it over with your finger so it doesn't crease though. The color I got "Yogurt" is a bronze/peach/pink color, so  pretty!

2) NYX "Pinched" blush was in my August faves. I seriously LOVE this blush, it's so beautiful!!

3) I enjoy the Eyeliner Marker, it's very easy to use, and the felt tip is so much easier than a brush to apply liquid eyeliner. I feel like the tip dries out quickly however, and I have to tap it on my hand to get the "juices flowing" again. However for $2.49, it's not bad. I'd buy it again.

4) The price drew me to the mascaras right away, the most expensive being $3.49. They are GREAT mascaras. I enjoy all 3 very much. The "All Eyes on Me" separates my lashes really well. The "False Lash" one really pumps them up, and the waterproof one is really good. (So good it takes me forever to wash it off, hehe)

5) I really like the nail polish. It is a very sheer, shimmery pink on it's own, which is nice. I like to layer it over other colors to create a different effect.

All in all, I enjoy everything I got and use them all often. If you haven't been to Ulta, check it out. They sell regular brands like Revlon and Cover Girl, not just high end makeup. The also have a hair salon in the store, which is pretty cool. You can get a sneak peek HERE.

     Happy beautifying!

Teal Eyes

Products used:
Sephora mineral powder in Medium 25
Ulta bronzer (from my big palette)
Ulta blush in "Fame"
Sephora lip gloss in "Rosy Glow"
Covergirl eye shadow in "Tapestry Taupe"
Ulta eye shadow in "Key West"
Ulta eye shadow in "Turquoise"
Sephora eye primer
LA Colors liquid eyeliner in Black
Ulta eye line pencil in Black
Covergirl Lash Blast mascara

I found this look online and thought I'd try it out myself. I am very pleased with how it turned out, it looks really cool. I am not going to give a step-by-step today, because frankly I don't have time. Also, it gets a little repetitive. The one thing I will say is that the lighter teal (Key West) goes on the inside half of the lid. The darker Turquoise goes on the outer half of the lid. Taupe goes into the crease and under bottom lashes to set off the teal. Try it out, it's a super fun look!

Natural Flirty Makeup

This is probably my favorite look to wear. For a "go-to" everyday look, this is the one I go for. It's a nice natural, eye brightener. I have a little trick for this, and it's a white eye liner pencil.

* Creme base shadow is a light color. The Mary Kay Eyesicles is perfect for this.
* Ulta "Gold Leaf" eye shadow (soft cream color)
* Ulta "Gold Dust" eye shadow (frosted rose gold)
* Ulta "Aztec Gold" (slightly darker brown/ bronze)  This is optional
* Ulta "Silk" eye shadow (frosted vanilla cream color)
* White eye liner pencil
* Brown liquid liner
* Brown pencil eye liner
* Maybelline Lash Blast mascara
* Sephora "Abricot" blush (slight shimmer) You want a nice warm color
* NYC face bronzer ($1.99 at drugstores)
* Any nude shimmer lip stick, I used my Ulta "Buff Shimmer"
* Sephora "Litchi Shine" lip gloss

     1) Prep your eyes with the creme shadow. Remember this helps your eye shadow blend better and have staying power. Blend well so you do not end up with any creasing as the day goes on.
     2) Sweep the "Gold Leaf" onto your lid area. You can blend this in. We are going for a natural look, not anything stark.
     3) We're going to use the "Gold Dust" on our crease. Use your windshield wiper motion, starting at the outside corner blending in. I used 1 brush for this whole look, my fluffy brush. If you choose to use different brushes, go for it!
     4) This next part is optional. If you feel you need a bit more defintion, you can take the "Aztec Gold" into your outer V area. I think because this is such a natural look, you don't need to. Because I have hooded eyes, I did this step just to define my lid a little better.
     5) This next step is my "trick" step. Take your white eyeliner pencil and draw it all over on your brow highlight area. Smudge and blend it in really well. This is what brightens up those eyes =)
     6) Using the "Silk", or "Crystalline" by Mary Kay works great, go over that white eyeliner. This gives it some shimmer, and now your highlight really pops.
     7) I prefer a liquid liner on my top lash line for this look. I keep it pretty thin, but wing out the edge just slightly. This gives you a flirty feel. It's a nice quick little change up from everyday eyeliner also.
     8) Use your pencil liner on your bottom lashes and your waterline.
     9) We want pretty dramatic lashes, so curl them very well. I trick is to heat your curler up with a blow dryer for a couple seconds. It makes your eyelash curler like a mini curling iron. Add your mascara, and go for a couple layers. The bigger the lashes, the better in my book.
     10) We are going to finish our face with some bronzer. I say since we're keeping it light, just apply it to the contours of your cheeks. I usually do the "3" application, but I feel that may be too much for this.
     11) Give the apples of your cheeks a pop with a nice shimmery apricot or peach blush. My fave "Abricot Plaisir" by Sephora is perfect for this look, but use what you already own.
     12) I'm not a big lip liner person, and this look doesn't really call for it anyway. Use a nice nude lipstick, and add some gloss.

I hope you will all try this look, it's my favorite by far. So fun and flirty, almost a "no- makeup makeup" look. Let me know how it works out for you, and Happy Beautifying!! =)

Look of the Day - 8/3/11

I did this look tailored specifically for my brown eyes. However, it is a soft look that would work on almost everyone. I also have hooded eyes, so I kept the eye liner very thin so I don't make the lid appear any smaller. Please remember these are the colors that I have, any similar colors you own work just as well =) Enjoy!

Ulta "Silk" eye shadow
Ulta "Molten" eye shadow

Ulta "Verdigris" eye shadow
Ulta "Sage" eye shadow

Ulta light "Gold Dust" eye shadow (there is a light and dark in my palette)
Ulta "Fame" blush  (rosy color)
Lightest bronzer in my Ulta palette (any bronzer will do)
Chocolate eye liner
Ulta Lash Blow Out mascara
Ulta "Flesh" lip liner
Sephora "Hot Coral" lip gloss

1) Foundation and concealer. Nothing special here, do your daily routine. Also do your eye lids to prime them for shadow.
2) I start off using the light Gold Dust color. Pack it on all over the lid. This is a light shimmery color and it will help my hooded eyes appear larger.
3) I found the light Sage color to be TOO light, so I mixed a little of the Verdigris into the brush to darken it a little bit. Sweep the green all the way over the crease, inner to outer corners. Blend out harsh lines.
4) Taking a small, stiff dome brush, draw the Molten color onto your outer V area. Don't blend it out, keep it in the V shape. Sweep it under the first 1/3 of your lower lashes to connect the color together. It also gives it a soft smokey look.
5) Silk goes up onto your brow highlight. Sweep a little also into your inner tearduct area to make your eyes stand out.
6)Line upper and lower waterlines, filling in the gaps between your lashes. This makes your lashes appear fuller. Thinly line the upper lid.
7) Curl lashes and use mascara.
8)Bronze your face in the "3" motion discussed in the previous blog.
9) Blush the apples of the cheeks.
10) Thickly line your lips and fill them in with the lip gloss.

Happy beautifying!

Look of the Day - 8/2/11

Products Used:
(Most products from Ulta "Getaway Glamour" palette)
-Bone" eye shadow (matte cream)
-Gold Leaf" eye shadow (rose gold frost)
-Aztec Gold" eye shadow (bronze shimmer)
-Gold Dust" eye shadow (grayish brown with a slight shimmer)
- Lighter bronzer
- Deep brown eyeliner
- CG Lash Blast mascara
- Sephora blush in "peche tendre" (matte peach/ pink)
 - Ulta lipstick in "Buff Shimmer" (nude shimmer)
- Sephora lip gloss in "Litchi Shine" (light peach)
- Sephora eye primer
*My earrings are from Forever 21, $2.80

1) Prime eyelids
2) Using a small stiff eye lid brush, pat the "Gold Leaf" color all over the eye lid. Using a patting motion as opposed to a bending motion keep the color in a better concentration. You want those lids to pop!
3) Using your fluffy crease brush, sweep the "Aztec Gold" into the crease and slightly above, towards your brow bone. Use a windshield wiper motion. Blend out the harsh edges.
4) Using the "Gold Dust" color, define your outer V area. (Lash line and crease) Use small strokes and draw a V into that outer corner. Blend it into the lashes, and into the crease over the previous color without covering the bronze.
5) Because we've used a lot of shimmer or frost on the lid, we need to balance it out with a matte shadow on our brow highlight. Using "Bone", pop the color right up underneath your eyebrow and blend it down slightly to connect the entire look.
6) Line your upper and lower lash lines with the brown eyeliner. I used a pencil liner for this look, but a liquid would work just fine.
7) Curl your lashes and add mascara. Don't forget your bottom lashes =)
8) Bronze your face in a "3" motion. Take it onto the cheek bones (suck your cheeks in to find the exact area), up the temples, and along the jaw bone. hence a "3" motion.
9) Sweep the peach color onto the apples of your cheeks. Smile for this, and don't apply to far up towards your eyes. Blend it out towards your hair line, not your nose.
10) Add your lip stick, top with the lip gloss, and Viola! You're done =)

I hope this is an easy, natural look for you. Let me know how it works out. Happy beautifying!
